The establishment of Darul Quran began in 1966 when the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tuanku Abdul Rahman Putera Al-Haj expressed his desire to establish an Institute for Quranic Studies in Malaysia. This intention was expressed during the inauguration of the National Mosque where this idea arose following the Musabaqah Al-Quran held since 1960 and the visit of the Rector of Al-Azhar University Sheikh Mahmud Syaltut at the inauguration of the National Mosque.
