Kuching Community College is the first Community College established in Sarawak and it is one of the 10 pioneer Community Colleges of the Ministry of Education Malaysia established on 1 June 2001. Its main campus is now at Jalan Sultan Tengah in the Parliamentary constituency P.168 Petra Jaya and its distance 10 km from the center of Kuching City.?
The college began operations at Sekolah Menengah Teknik Sejingkat, Kuching, with eight pioneer staff.?
A total of 26 students were registered as the first group to attend the Automotive Certificate and Fashion Design and Clothing Certificate Course on 12 June 2001. As of the July 2006 Session, there were 300 students enrolled full-time at Kuching Community College.?To date, 3 courses have been offered in full, namely a.?Architectural Planner Certificate b.?Fashion and Clothing Certificate c.?The Community College Tourism and Travel Certificate is a Public Institution of Higher Learning (IPTA) under the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.?Community Colleges Established through Memorandum No. 398/2225/00 submitted by the Minister of Education to the Cabinet on 5 July 2000. This memorandum contains the concept of establishment and implementation of Community Colleges in each parliamentary constituency.?Community Colleges play a role in providing training and skills opportunities to all levels of society as well as educational opportunities for secondary school graduates before entering the job market or furthering their studies to higher levels.?Twelve (12) pilot Community Colleges began operations in 2001. At the central level, the Community College Management Division (BPKK), Department of Polytechnic Studies and Community Colleges (JPPKK),?The Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (KPTM) has been responsible for overseeing the management of all KPTM Community Colleges.?At the institutional level, the Community College is headed by a Director and assisted by senior officers, lecturers / instructors and support staff.
