The history of the Establishment of the Terengganu Islamic Foundation (YIT) began with the resolution of the Terengganu State Ulama Scholars Seminar which took place on 3 August 1973. One of the important conclusions decided at the end of the seminar reads: "The State Government should as soon as possible establish an Islamic Foundation which will carry out duties on dakwah, research inside and outside.This foundation should work closely with the Terengganu Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT)

Meanwhile, the State Legislative Assembly passed a law to become the "Statutory Body" of Yayasan Islam Terengganu Enactment Number 1, Year 1974 on 2 April 1974. The official launch of the establishment of Yayasan Islam Terengganu was on 9 August 1976 by the late DYMM Tuanku Al-Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah ibni the late Sultan Zainal Abidin is located at Istana Maziah, Kuala Terengganu. On 1 April 1978, Yayasan Islam Terengganu began recruiting officers and staff on the 2nd Floor, Kuala Terengganu District Office Building.
